Chapter 1
Wandering Through The Thicket🏡
Lillia was born into a traveling herd that wandered the same winding paths year after year. She was loved, raised by many caring and familiar faces, yet for some reason she never quite felt like she belonged.Nothing was wrong, no one was unkind, her family cared for her as they did all their own. Yet whenever she imagined her future, her family and the forest were never in it. She dreamed of distant forests, bustling cities, and strangers whose stories she had never heard. While others found comfort in the familiar, some part of her was always drawn toward what was beyond the horizon. For a long time, she tried to embrace the life laid before her. She learned her families traditions, memorized their stories, and walked the same paths her friends and family did until they felt as natural as breathing. But the longing for more never faded.Eventually the day came where Lillia decided it was time to finally leave the familiar behind. She took only the necessities with her- with the addition of a magical staff her mother gifted to her when she first learned to walk the forest on her own. So, with everything packed, she said her goodbyes and walked away from the familiar grove. She looked back one last time before stepping beyond the path she knew.Leaving everything she ever knew behind, her heart ached, but she knew something more waited for her. It was time to discover what lay beyond the world she had always known and seek out what she knew was waiting for her to discover. The years that followed were filled with wandering. She crossed flower-filled fields that hummed at dusk. She slept beneath paths canopied by willow trees, and shared tea and stories with countless strangers. Wherever she traveled, she found ways to help. She listened carefully, worked willingly, and offered kindness to all those who crossed her path. The people she crossed paths with were always kind and welcomed her with warmth. And for a little while, she would feel she had found a place she belonged to.Yet sooner or later, that feeling would fade. She would thank those who she met for the time they shared together, knowing that their time together was coming to an end. Inevitably, she would leave behind those people, places, and memories- continuing onward. She never knew whether she was simply being picky with the people and places she came across. Or if she really hadn't found the place she was meant to be yet.Over time, she came to believe that perhaps she was just meant to be a passing presence in the lives of others- the traveler who arrived with helping hands and kind words, then disappeared down the road before roots could grow. But one day, she met someone. Someone different. Someone that she couldn't just pass by.He was sat atop a rock, back turned away from the path, clearly engrossed in whatever book he held in his hands.Lillia would have passed him the way she passed so many others- with a polite greeting or a small smile, her footsteps already leading her forward. But instead he looked up from his reading- “Careful,” he said gently, putting his mask on before turning to her, “Stepping on those would give you a nasty rash.”She paused, glancing down to find her hoof hovering over a cluster of small golden mushrooms. She stepped back immediately. "Thank you," she said, already feeling that familiar urge to continue onward."You're traveling," he observed. She nodded."So am I."And that was all.No questions about where she had come from. No curiosity about where she was going. He simply, mentioned a spring nearby and invited her to join. Before she could even respond, he began walking, and she found herself following. She never could have explained exactly why.But eventually one thing lead to another, and they found themselves walking along the path together. Talking and getting to know each other. Once their time at the spring was over- instead of inevitably departing, they decided to stick together. As they traveled together more and more, they bonded and became closer. They worked together to help those they met along the way. The days filled with small acts of trust and quiet companionship. He handed her tools without looking, knowing she would always catch them. And she learned which herbs he would need before he even had to ask. For the first time in her life, Lillia did not feel like a guest in someone else's story. One evening, while sitting beside a campfire beneath the trees, she found herself thinking about something that had followed her for years."Home".Over the years that followed after she left her family and grove, Lillia had searched for a new place that would feel right to her. A place where she would finally feel she was meant to stay. And then a different thought came to her."What if home isn't something you find?" she asked quietly. "What if it's something you build?"Dr. Plague handed her a cool glass of water before replying, "Then we'd better get building."The Treehouse did not appear all at once.It began as a simple platform nestled at the base of a large willow tree, hardly more than a place to rest. But over time it grew into something greater.Lanterns hanging from high branches shining behind the thick leaves. Spare bedrolls waited for weary travelers. The scent of tea, herbs, and campfires drifted through the air. Lillia and Dr. Plague were always working to make sure there was room for one more guest. One person, one more story, one more soul searching for a place to belong. In building a home for herself, Lillia also created one for many others. Travelers from all over the world, looking for what she always had, home. A place to belong.Overtime The Treehouse became much more than a few platforms. It became, well... a real Treehouse. Rooms were made and connected together by bridges, spanning across the massive branches of the willow tree. It became a place for all travelers, that no matter where they came from before, were welcome. And now, when the forest settles into silence and the lanterns sway gently in the night, Lillia often sits outside The Treehouse watching fireflies glow in the night sky. Dr. Plague sitting inside, watching from the window, always making sure she was safe. She would sit outside, knowing that somewhere out there, another traveler is walking a lonely path, carrying the same quiet questions she once carried. And when they eventually arrive, uncertain and road-worn, they will find the light waiting for them. And, waiting beneath its glow, they will find Lillia. Not as a stranger. Not as a guest. But as someone waiting to welcome them home.
